Railings must not only look beautiful but must also be safe and adhere to and be in compliance with the Ontario Building Code.

Omega Iron Works and Railings understands the Ontario Building Code and will ensure that if necessary your product will meet the required building codes and by laws. 



Residential Single Family Homes:

Railings or guardrails for single family homes must meet the following guidelines according to the OBC:

On any landing where there is a drop of less than 5ft, 9 inches, the guardrail must be 36 inches in height.
If the landing has a drop of more than 5ft, 9 inches, the guardrail must be 42 inches in height.
Stair rails, whether they are mounted to the stairs or on walls, must be 36 inches high.
Vertical pickets must be no more than 4 inches on center.

Multi Residential and Commercial Buildings:

All landing guardrails, regardless of drop height must be 42 inches high.
Stair rails, whether they are mounted to the stairs or on walls, must be 36 inches high.

Vertical pickets must be no more than 4 inches on center.

Pool enclosures:

Guardrails should be a minimum of 48 inches and should not be climbable.
Any gates leading into the pool area should be both self-closing and self-latching.
All pickets should be 4 inches on center and should meet the minimum lateral load requirements.
